The Chickamauga battle took place south of Chattanooga over a huge area, and was the site of unbelievable carnage. It's hard to reconcile that with rolling hills and scores of bicyclists. We stopped the van along the way to describe to the kids the thousands of troops that were massed on the fields and scattered in confusion in the woods. If I recall correctly both the Union and the Confederacy fielded around 60,000 soldiers, a third of which were killed or wounded. So much history. OK, now we can drive to Greenville.
